It has gradually become clear to us that a key element of the journey beyond modernism is ‘integration’, where thinking, being and doing are understood as coherent rather than separate parts of our lives and selves. Having benefited from the modern differentiation of the scientific, the ethical and the aesthetic spheres of life, and realised their limitations in helping us address current and emerging needs, we now need to achieve a better integration of what is true, right and beautiful. So, in this paper we want to share the experiences of some individuals, groups and organisations that seem to us to have gone further than most on the journey to integration.
We are not seeking to be prescriptive here; simply to show that there are numerous examples, developed by a diverse range of people across the globe, which are already beginning to address these issues. Nor are these examples a complete catalogue of the kinds of ‘doing’ which we believe will be necessary to transcend current difficulties. They are simply examples that we happen to know about. They represent the tip of a very considerable iceberg.
This is the longest paper of any you will find on this website – for good reason, given the nature of the examples given below. There are other examples that we know about which we are not able to include here. There are probably many more examples, about which you are aware, which have even more to teach us and we would be glad to hear about them.
