In a previous paper we explored public health success stories and concluded that they largely relied on our ability to understand, predict and control. We turn now to evidence of a set of emerging problems that are not amenable to this approach: depression and anxiety; the loss of well-being; alcohol problems; and health inequalities. The growth of depression, anxiety and the loss of well-being provides the most direct evidence of the degree to which modern populations are feeling overwhelmed.
