Drugs, Addiction and the Ingenuity Gap

Throughout history and across cultures, almost all human societies have used a variety of substances to alter mood and states of mind. Shamanic cultures, for example, have used mood-altering substances to connect with the spirit world for healing purposes. Yet the emergence of a drugs problem is much less common and has been associated with more specific circumstances. It is therefore worth trying to understand what factors in a society change an almost universal human predilection into a social problem.
